There are different legislative levels in the language policy operating in Quebec. There is the federal level, which affects the federal government and federal institutions in the province: here the official policy is bilingualism in French and English. At the provincial level, the official language is French. At the sub-provincial level, there are provisions for municipal entities to be officially bilingual, if a significant proportion of their population is conversant in the minority language English.
